DanyloHalytskyi Lvov National Medical University

The Lviv National Medical Univesity named after DanyloHalytsky is one of leading medical universities of ІV level of accreditation, which is renowned due to its ancient history and glorious traditions. It is subordinate to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Today, the Lviv National Medical University named after DanyloHalytsky unites 6 faculties, medical college, and 75 chairs (including 47 clinical, as well as 19 basic chairs for institutions of higher medical learning of Ukraine).

The annual attendants of the University amount to approximately 19855 persons; out of such number, there are 6193 students, 1319 interns and more than 10 thousand attendees of the Faculty of Post-Graduate Education.

During the last year, more than 10 thousand medical practitioners and qualified pharmaceutical chemists and approximately 900 interns enhanced their professional level at the Faculty of Post-Graduate Education.

The scientific and pedagogical activities are carried out by 1320 scientists: 149 Doctors of Sciences and more than 696 PhDs, including 123 professors, 450 associate professors and senior lecturers.

The professors and lecturers of the Lviv National Medical University named after DanyloHalytsky include: 4 academicians and correspondent members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 21 academicians and correspondent members of public academies, 7 winners of State Awards of Ukraine in the field of science and technologies, 11 honourable fellows of science and technology, 5 honourable fellows of education, 1 honourable fellow of physical culture and sports and 20 honourable medical practitioners of Ukraine.

Only during the years of Ukraine’s independence, the Faculty of Post-Graduate Education trained and re-trained approximately 200 000 medical practitioners and qualified pharmaceutical chemists.

Commencing from 1991, the University’s scientists defended more than 800 theses. During the same period of time, approximately 3 thousand guides, methodological guidelines and monographs were published, as well as more than 35 scientific articles.

The post-graduate courses are available at the University in 32 specialties and there is a center for doctoral training in 6 specialities. There are 5 specialized scientific boards for defence of PhD’s and Doctor’s theses in 11 specialties. As of 1 January, 2016, at the University there were 41 planned and carried out defenses of Doctor’s theses. During the last year, 7 Doctor’s theses, 42 PhDs theses and 14 Master’s works were completed and defended. The professor’s scientific degree was awarded to 8 persons; the degree of associate professor was awarded to 19 persons. Approximately 380 employees of the University enhanced their professional level, including during their studies abroad.

The following magazines are published with participation of the University’s scientists: “ActaMedicaLeopoliensia”/Lviv Medical Magazine, Experimental and Clincial Physiology and Biochemistry”, “Stomatological Bulletin”, “Hepatology”, “Medical science applied in railway transport”, “Implantology. Parodontology. Osteology”, “Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy and Medical Standardization”, “The World of Orthodontia”, “Allergies, from which our children may suffer”; collections of scientific papers: “Therapeutical Collection of NOSH” and “Urgent Issues of Preventive Medical Science”; All-Ukrainian periodicals: newspapers “Alma Мater” and “Peoples’ Health”, etc.

According to its performance results, the Lviv National Medical University named after DanyloHalytsky has leading positions in ratings among the institutions of higher learning and higher educational medical institutions in Ukraine.

History of the University

I n 1661, by the privilege of Jan Casimir, the Lviv Jesuit Collegium was ranked as Academy and awarded the title of the University comprising four faculties.

In 1784, the university comprising four faculties: theology, law, philosophy and medical, was restored.

New academic buildings and clinical facilities of the University were built and began to operate during 1891–1898: anatomy and physiology, anatomicopathological, chemical, obstetrical and gynecological, surgical, internal diseases, and dermatovenereology, etc.

In 1921, as a part of the Ukrainian Secret University, the medical faculty consisting of 10 chairs was established and 185 students were admitted thereto.

In 1939, the medical faculty of the Lviv University was separated from the university and re-organized into the Lviv State Medical University with two faculties: medical and preventive; pharmaceutical.

On 20 May 1942, pursuant to the order of the German Occupation Administration, the medical professional courses were created on the facilities of the Lviv Medical Institute. In principle, their educational programs did not differ from the pre-war ones and they were virtually identical to the German Programs of Higher Medical Education.

In 1944, upon expiry of two months after liberation of Lviv from the occupation, a new academic year commenced at the Lviv State Medical Institute.

From 1961, along with training of domestic professional personnel, the University has been teaching foreign citizens from the countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

In 1996, the Lviv State Medical Institute acquired the status of an institution of higher learning of IV level of accreditation and was renamed into the Lviv State Medical University.

In 2003, the Lviv State Medical University named after DanyloHalytsky was awarded the status of National Medical University.
